Ecosystem services are the benefits obtained from an ecosystem that have great significance in sustainable development. Urbanization has triggered significant changes on urban spatial patterns, which have had a great impact on the ecosystem services. However, studies on the spatiotemporally varying relationship between urban spatial patterns and ecosystem services are lacking. Taking as a case study, the Nansihu Lake Basin in China, this study aimed to explore the spatiotemporally varying relationship between urban spatial patterns and ecosystem services. Urban spatial patterns were derived by integrating remote sensing and spatial metrics. Ecosystem service values were calculated using ecosystem service models. The spatiotemporally varying impact of urban spatial patterns on ecosystem services was quantified using the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model. The findings indicate that urban spatial patterns and ecosystem services have dramatically varied with the urbanization process. The estimated parameters indicate that urban spatial patterns have significant impacts on ecosystem services. The GWR revealed a spatiotemporally varying correlation and improved the explanatory ability in comparison with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model. The investigation of the impact of urban spatial patterns on ecosystem services can provide more practical support for effective urban planning and ecosystem management.

Ecological restoration measures implemented in China have profoundly impacted vegetation NPP. This study aimed to estimate the effects of the land conversion and management measures on the grassland ecosystem in semi-arid regions. Land use data were employed from 2000 to 2015 to compare land conversion and coverage changes in Xilingol grassland. Then, the contributions of land conversion and management policies were quantified by assessing the difference between actual NPP and climate-induced NPP changes. The results indicated that the grassland area had a net loss of 534.42 km 2 , and the net area of increased vegetation coverage was 74,683.05 km 2 . Furthermore, the total NPP increased by 8,010.73 Gg C·yr −1 (1 Gg = 10 9 g), of which the human activities, including grazing management measures (+6,809.40 Gg C·yr −1 ) and land conversion (45.72 Gg C·yr −1 ) contributed to 85.58% of the increase in NPP. Transformation from desert and farmland dominated grassland expansion and NPP increase, while urbanization and desertification caused large grassland reduction and NPP loss. The grazing management increased vegetation NPP in most regions except for some regions in the desert steppe and the farming-pastoral zone. Related policies should be further adjusted to strengthen the management of the desert steppe and farming-pastoral regions. ARTICLE HISTORY

Economic Globalization Impacts on the Ecological Environment of Inland Developing Countries: A Case Study of Laos from the Perspective of the Land Use/Cover Change

Economic globalization promotes the economic development of underdeveloped regions but also influences the ecological environments of these regions, such as natural forest degradation. For inland developing regions with underdeveloped traffic routes, are the effects on the ecological environment also as obvious? To reveal the response characteristics of the ecological environment of the inland developing countries to globalization, we took Laos as an example, and used the land use/cover change data and also its exports and imports data to analyze the ecological environment change since the millennium. Land use transfer matrix analysis showed that Laos had encountered a large conversion of 14.43% natural forest to plantation forest since 2000 to 2017, and also a degradation of 5.94% natural forest to shrubland and grassland. Landscape pattern analysis showed that these changes were the main reasons of the fragmentation of ecological patches, which would lead to a reduction in biodiversity. More, topographic analysis further showed that natural forest degradation mainly took place in high-altitude and large slope areas, which could increase the potential of natural hazards such as floods. Coupling analysis with its exports and imports data indicated that economic globalization still had a significant impact on the country’s ecological environment although Laos is an inland developing country. Laos should strengthen the regulation of renewable resources such as forests and water resources, to avoid losing the renewable resources market while still enjoying the dividends of economic globalization. At the same time, it is necessary to accurately evaluate the indirect impacts of development on neighboring countries to ensure sustainable development.
