“…However, other studies found a high heterophil/lymphocyte ratio in urban birds ( Ribeiro et al, 2022 ), indicating they have an altered leukocyte profile caused by chronic stress. Our three urban sites are along a stream that is constantly polluted by sewage and siltation ( Diniz et al, 2021 ), promoting eutrophication. Acoustic pollution and artificial light at night are also high in those sites.…”

“…Other possible links for the differences in sperm morphology might be disturbances in the area's water source caused by urbanization, such as pollution and a decline in water quality (Diniz et al, 2021). Although the study was not designed to test possible urban contamination, the present findings raise the question of the possible influence of urban activities surrounding the area on biological aspects of local anuran population, as studies have reported such influence on gonad development (Lambert et al, 2015; Smits et al, 2014), as well as on the sperm morphology of animals inhabiting urban and polluted areas (Guo et al, 2018).…”

“…The animals originated from an urban environment-the "Lago do Amor"-located within the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, on the Campus of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil (20 30 0 12.11 00 S, 54 37 0 1.65 00 E). The area is located close to the center of the city, surrounded by an urban fabric, and the water body is supplied by the Bandeira Stream, which is reported to be highly affected by anthropogenic activities (Diniz et al, 2021). The specimens were collected from the margins of the water body, surrounded by typical Cerrado vegetation, and were usually found hiding and calling in the border foliage.…”
