The quest to improve teaching on a wide scale is an enduring challenge globally. Yet demonstrable improvement in teaching quality is both elusive and slow. In this essay, I explore some of the complexities that contribute to the slow pace of change, including: the slippage between teachers and teaching as the object of improvement; the poorly defined concept of good teaching; the difficulty of demonstrating improvement in teaching; institutional constraints on improvement efforts; the growing web of marketing; and conflicting conceptions of professional development itself. Using my ongoing work on Quality Teaching and Quality Teaching Rounds, I illustrate how we have addressed these matters to produce measurable and sustainable effects. Finally, I elaborate the key principles of our approach, while acknowledging the challenges of wide-scale improvement, given the institutional and discursive character of the field.

E-learning became attractive choices for academic institutions owing to their benefits, especially offering transparent and fast students' evaluation as well as innovative teaching methods. However, security issues related to e-learning have been raised by its stakeholders mainly faculty members, students, and administration. Authenticate examination takers during the electronic evaluation (e- evaluation), comprising assessment (E-assessment) and exam (E-exam), is a major challenge. In this paper, an advanced scheme is proposed to resolve this imperative challenge by introducing an efficient secure approach for supervising e-evaluation. The scheme collects information related to student and its behavior during the courses' activities and uses them for controlling unethical behavior during e-evaluation. The proposal doesn't need additional components and considered the continuous authentication using the random generation of a variable number of questions built from the collected information. The concerned student must respond to these questions which are generated periodically throughout the e-evaluation for guaranteeing his continuous authentication. Simulation experiments are conducted to validate our approach in which the obtained results show that student authentication is effectively guaranteed at a low cost whatever the student number and whatever the e-evaluation content.

Abstract-E-Learning and distance education have become common choices for academic institutions. Based on advances in information technology systems, educational institutions have enabled the employment of e-learning systems as teaching courses and evaluation students. However, security issues related to e-learning systems have been raised by e-learning environment stakeholders which including faculty members, and students as well as data. In addition, e-learning opponents argue that incapability of e-learning environment to authenticate examination takers is one of the major challenges. E-assessment is an important element of LMS based e-courses, and student authentication is mostly realized as one of the major concerns for e-assessments. For this reason, the main challenge facing the security of e-assessment and the e-learning environment is how to authenticate students because unauthorized persons can access and manage information. In this work, we propose a novel security scheme that contributes in resolving this vital issue by introducing an efficient secure model for supervising online evaluation including e-assessment or e-exam. The scheme addresses this imperative problem by proposing a novel approach that integrates available databases authentication technologies in conjunction with elearning environments for controlling unethical behavior during e-assessment process. Moreover, the proposed scheme considers the continuous random authentication using students' information stored previously in the databases that guarantee identity and authentication. To validate our proposal, and evaluate its performances and effectiveness, an extensive simulation work is conducted over e-learning platform similar to Desire to learn (D2L).Keywords-e-learning platform; e-learning security; presence and identity authentication; e-assessment and e-exam. 62
