Impact of weather conditions on airport arrival delay and throughput

Abstract: Purpose Weather events have a significant impact on airport arrival performance and may cause delays in operations and/or constraints in airport capacity. In Europe, almost half of all regulated airport traffic delay is due to adverse weather conditions. Moreover, the closer airports operate to their maximum capacity, the more severe is the impact of a capacity loss due to external events such as weather. Various weather uncertainties occurring during airport operations can significantly delay some arrival pro… Show more

“…It highlights the relationship between ILS categories, meteorological conditions, and the duration of halted landing operations at these airports. The text also provides data from Table 4 , which demonstrates how upgrading ILS categories can significantly reduce the probability of halted landings during specific time periods compared with study [ 52 ]. It emphasizes the critical role of ILS in ensuring smooth airport operations, particularly in adverse weather conditions following the particular results of [ 53 ].…”

“…Álvaro and Fernando were based on the Bayesian network method, this paper proposes a method to predict and evaluate the operation state of the airport arrival system, so as to improve the arrival process of the airport [13]. Álvaro also combines the delay and capacity indicators at different stages of airport operations to simulate the causal relationship between airport arrival performance indicators and meteorological events, quantify the impact of weather on airport arrival conditions, and predict the evolution of airport operating scenarios [14]. Liang considered the aircraft recovery problem with airport capacity constraints and maintenance flexibility, and proposed a column generation heuristic method to solve it [15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…Weather is one of the most important sources of uncertainty in the ATM system. According to a recent article of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) [ 2 ], adverse weather conditions is the main cause of air traffic delay in the USA, being the cause of about 70% of delays, whereas in Europe, almost half of the delays are due to adverse weather conditions [ 3 ]. The cost for airlines of an hour delay ranges from about 1,400 to 4,500 dollars.…”
