Impact of Thermodiffusion on the Initial Vertical Distribution of Species in Hydrocarbon Reservoirs

Abstract: In this work we propose a methodology, based on molecular dynamics simulations, to quantify the influence of segregation and thermodiffusion on the initial state distribution of the fluid species in hydrocarbon reservoirs. This convection-free approach has been applied to a synthetic oil composed of three normal alkanes and to a real acid gas. It has been found that the thermodiffusion effect induced by the geothermal gradient is similar (but opposite in sign) to that due to segregation for both mixtures. In a… Show more

“…To extend such a method to multi-component mixtures, it is needed to understand the effects of buoyancy on NE fluctuations, starting with ternary mixtures. For these reasons, our current results are also part of the SCCO (Soret Coefficients for Crude Oil) project [35,36], currently being jointly developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Space Agency (CSA), aimed at obtaining reference quantitative values of thermodiffusion coefficients in multi-component fluid mixtures, a goal of interest also for the oil industry.…”

“…The first empirical investigation on ternary mixtures in microgravity conditions has been provided by the experiments performed during the SCCO mission on-board the Russian FOTON M3 in 2007 [67][68][69][70]49] and the DCMIX #1 campaign on-board the ISS in 2011 [62]. One of the outputs of these first experiments was that obtaining all the values of the mass diffusion coefficient matrix is quite difficult for mixtures of three similar molecules due to the fact that the two eigenvalues of the matrix are quite similar.…”

“…In some field cases, the geothermal gradient induces compositional gradients of the same order of magnitude than the gravitation [4][5]. Since the gravitational segregation is well quantified, the current practice in the petroleum industry consists in tuning the thermodiffusion parameters in order to match the available compositional field data.…”
