Gravity effects on Soret-induced non-equilibrium fluctuations in ternary mixtures

Abstract: Abstract. We discuss the gravity effects on the dynamics of composition fluctuations in a ternary mixture around the non-equilibrium quiescent state induced by thermodiffusion when subjected to a stationary temperature gradient. We found that the autocorrelation matrix of concentration fluctuations can be expressed as the sum of two exponentially decaying concentration modes. Without accounting for confinement, we obtained exact analytical expressions for the two decay rates which, as a consequence of gravity, … Show more

“…Experimental investigation of the dynamics of c-NEFs has been proposed as a novel technique for the simultaneous measurement of diffusion and thermal diffusion coefficients in binary mixtures [12,62], with a possible extension to ternary and multi-component mixtures [63][64][65]. A quick and robust method to obtain reliable values for these coefficients is of high interest to the oil industry, and may open new applications.…”

“…For oscillatory instability, nonlinear calculations show that convective separation is observed in the range of Rayleigh numbers close to the boundary values. Pancorbo et al [34] proposed an analysis of the stability of a ternary gas mixture, which is brought out of equilibrium by imposing an external stable temperature gradient. For the concentration equations, a diagonalizing diffusion matrix was used.…”
