Impact of the Types of Clusters on the Innovation Output and the Appropriation of Rents from Innovation

Abstract: The ability to generate innovations and capture the rents from innovation are important for firms' competitive advantage. Increasingly firms seek knowledge abundant locations, or industry clusters, to access novel knowledge and generate innovations through knowledge recombinations (Schumpeter, 1934). We examine how different types of clusters impact on the innovation output, the knowledge flows among the clustered firms and, ultimately, on who captures the rents from innovation. The type of cluster reflects th… Show more

“…Even if there is still a long way to completely understand the phenomenon and its potential as a policy tool, industrial clusters have been effective in boosting key elements for development (Babkin et al , 2017; Delgado et al , 2014; Duranton, 2011; Portugal et al , 2012; Zeibote and Muravska, 2018).…”

“…On the other hand, Ferreira, Serra, Costa, Maccari and Couto (2012) show that the interaction between businesses, individuals and cluster agents are important mechanisms to facilitate innovations, although some clusters may record different results because of the heterogeneity of the available resources. This means that accessing shared resources may have a positive effect on the innovativeness of firms (Delgado et al, 2010).…”
