Impact of the Jamapa River Basin on the Gulf of Mexico

Abstract: The Jamapa River basin is located in the central region of the State of Veracruz, it is born in the Pico de Orizaba and connects with the Veracruz Reef System in the Gulf of Mexico, both protected natural areas. The lower part of the basin has the contribution of two important effluents, Arroyo Moreno, which is a protected natural area, strongly impacted due to municipal discharges from the metropolitan cities Veracruz-Boca del Río-Medellín. And the Estero, which is part of a complex aquatic system that discha… Show more

“…The quality of the effluents and their final discharge site are crucial issues to preserve the health of ecosystems. Coinciding with the above, Castañeda-Chávez and Lango-Reynoso [31] and Castañeda-Chávez et al [52] indicated that there is a diversity of chemical and microbiological compounds that the Jamapa river basin receives; Likewise, they re-ported that these discharges come from different sources of contamination such as industry, waste, sewage, agricultural and urban runoff, and the accumulation of sediments.…”

“…The lower portion of the basin is located immediately to the discharge zone of this artificial system. The basin area receives the contribution of important effluents, but is also strongly impacted by municipal discharges from the cities of Boca del Río-Veracruz and Medellín [29][30][31][32].…”

“…This fish sizecoral coverage relationship could be supported by the positioning and discharge of the Jamapa, Papalopan and La Antigua rivers, where the difference of salinity and sedimentation between the shallow and deeper areas enhance the food availability for demersal species with smaller sizes and higher population densities. These discharge patterns may not influence deeper reefs (Peŕez-España et al, 2015;Castañeda-Chavez and Lango-Reynoso, 2021) as the coral coverage would be less affected (Fabricius, 2005).…”
