Following the gradual decline of Arctic sea ice, shipping using Arctic routes increased from 2010. This led to an upsurge in the number of studies investigating the potential of Arctic maritime routes. A systematic literature review was conducted to assess the extant literature from 1980 to 2017 on comparative studies between Arctic and traditional routes. This review also aimed to provide an initial understanding on route choice decision-making factors and to contribute to the literature by providing suggestions for future research and methodological considerations. The competitiveness of Arctic routes is evaluated from both economic and environmental perspectives. Research themes and methodological characteristics are analysed in order to establish an evidence base in Arctic shipping literature. It is identified that analytical research methods and transport cost models are mainly employed. The results indicate that although Arctic routes can be more cost-effective and energy efficient compared to traditional ones, especially in the long-term, they can mainly serve as seasonal alternatives for bulk and specialised shipping in the short-term.

Known as the Belt and Road Initiative, China Railway(CR) Express is a cross-continent railway container transport mode between China and Europe, and plays an important role for connecting China and Eurasia market to boost the regional economy. In order to balance cargo flow and improve transport efficiency, this paper proposes a hierarchical multimodal hub location problem with time restriction for CR Express network. A mix integer programming is formulated and derived, and some results are concluded based on our observation and investigation on CR Express. The results illustrate the rail hub location in China with different rail hub number input, and the hinterland of every hub is explored as well. The rail hubs tend to cover more regions first and then be spatially agglomerative in the central and western regions of China. Moreover, we find that the city Wulanchabu that is located in Inner Mongolia Province has the largest hinterland range, and that strong competition among hubs exists in central and western of China, especially for Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Chongqing and Chengdu. The aim of this article is to assess the effect of strategies of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on sustainable economic development of member countries. This study is based on qualitative approach and secondary data. A number of documents such as journal articles, government reports, books, book chapters and working papers have been consulted to substantiate the arguments. The article explores that there is a potential effect of BRI on the sustainable economic development of its member countries. Some of the member countries are getting direct benefits from it and other countries are in the way of getting benefits through infrastructure development, trading, cultural exchanges and mutual political agreements. It is empowering a number of developing countries through economic development by linking economic corridors, seaport, roads and railway networks. This article also finds that so many economic zones are planned to open in member countries to get benefits from BRI initiative by promoting infrastructure, energy, gas, oil and electricity, roads, railways and other related projects.
