Zoonotic Brugia pahangi parasite infections in humans have emerged over two decades in Southeast Asia (SEA), including Malaysia and Thailand. The species is commonly found in domestic cats and dogs as the natural reservoir hosts. The sporadic transmission pattern of B. pahangi zoonosis causes childhood infections in Thailand and adulthood infections in Malaysia. It is crucial to understand the vulnerability in how zoonotic B. pahangi parasite is transmitted to susceptible persons in receptive settings and the exposure to the infection under impoverished environment to which the human-vector-animal interactions are related. This acquisition of knowledge will help multiple health science professions to apply One Health approach to strengthening the capacity in diagnosis and surveillance, and hence detecting and monitoring the “lingering” zoonotic B. pahangi infections present in vulnerable populations in Thailand and elsewhere in SEA. In this review article, the authors focused on articulating the concepts of plantation-related zoonotic B. pahangi filariasis by updating current knowledge of B. pahangi life cycle, vector’s life cycle and current state of research on the epidemiology and ecology of B. pahangi zoonosis. Armigeres subalbatus is a type of mosquito that is widely distributed in the world, including Jember Regency, Indonesia. The larval natural habitat is mainly found in trees that can hold water, adult mosquitoes can be found indoors or outdoors. In the field of health, Ar. subalbatus acts as a vector for filariasis, Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and zika. This study aims to identify the morphological characteristics of the Ar. subalbatus from Sumbersari Village, Jember Regency. Although in Indonesia there is no significant evidence of the role of Ar. subalbatus in the health sector, it is important to detect the morphological features of Ar. subalbatus to be able to detect mosquitoes properly. Knowing the exact type of mosquito can provide consideration for appropriate mosquito control methods. The method used is through the installation of ovitrap in November 2022. The ovitrap media is in the form of tap water, the ovitrap is left for 8 days. Ar. mosquitoes were found in the larval stage of the ovitrap. The larvae were brought to the Jember University Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Zoology Laboratory for hatching and data collection on the morphological characteristics of mosquitoes. The results of this study include the morphological characteristics used for the identification of Ar. subalbatus which includes the shape of the proboscis, flagelomeres on the palps, color of the scutum, border of the scutum, size of the antepronotum, bands on the pleura, prespiracular and postspiracular areas, edges of the mesepimeron, abdomen (tergum, sterna), apex of the femur, venation of the wings, alula and upper calypter of the wings.

Background Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a major threat to human health. Bangladesh is considering introducing a JEV vaccine, however, the investment case is hampered by a poor understanding of key aspects of JEV ecology, including underlying patterns of infection, the infection fatality ratio, and which host and vectors maintain transmission. Methods We conducted a seroprevalence study in individuals of all ages in Chapai Nawabganj, Bangladesh. We tested blood samples for anti-JEV antibodies using a novel assay that limits cross-reactivity with dengue virus, trapped mosquitoes, and collected information about potential host species. We combined our results with data from a pig census, human case data and healthcare seeking patterns, all from the same region, and used mathematical models to recover risk factors for infection, and underlying probabilities of severe disease and death. Findings We found 14.3% (203/1455) of participants had antibodies against JEV. We estimated 0.5% of the susceptible population gets infected each year, however, infection risk was spatially heterogeneous, with the presence of pigs in the vicinity being the most important predictor of seropositivity. We identified 10 different known mosquito vectors for JEV. We estimated that 1 in 1,000 infections result in severe disease, 1 in 10,000 result in death, and 76% of severe cases are missed by surveillance systems. Interpretation JEV infection risk is highly spatially heterogeneous, with the underlying potential of vaccines linked to the distribution of pig-raising communities.
