Impact of Population Growth and Climate Change on the Freshwater Resources of Lamu Island, Kenya

Abstract: Demand for freshwater is rising with factors, such as population growth, land use change and climate variations, rendering water availability in the future uncertain. Groundwater resources are being increasingly exploited to meet this growing demand. The aim of this study is to identify the influence of population growth induced by land use change and climate change on the future state of freshwater resources of Lamu Island in Kenya where a major port facility is under construction. The results of this study s… Show more

“…Since most of the businesses were in rental structures, some were in temporary iron shelters, this could have attributed to the lack of rainwater harvesting structures as the decision to install storage is mainly by the land owners. [9] suggests that the biggest challenge to widespread rainwater harvesting, especially in the developing world, may fall at the centre of finance, followed by the volume of water depending on erratic rainfall, calling for large water storages [10], the inability to link with the other urban water components, poor public perception and quality, and a lack of commitment from the politicians.…”

“…Groundwater is an important alternative water resource for the development of urban and rural areas with increasing needs. Demand for fresh water is increasing due to factors such as population growth, irrigated agricultural activities, and climate change [1]. Climate change and the threat of droughts, surface-water potential, and the risk of pollution of surface waters caused by human activities such as agriculture and industrialization [2,3] necessitate the identification of alternative water resources.…”

“…However, it has a large water footprint that is unsustainable for a semi-arid and water stressed country like South Africa, with low average rainfall of 465 mm, which is below the global average of 860 mm [2]. Demand for this important scarce resource is expected to increase due to rapid industrial development, increasing human population, per capita consumption increase, and the resulting impact of human activities on the environment [3]. High water demand and consumption leads to increases in the volume of wastewater generated.…”
