Impact of petroleum pollution on aquatic coastal ecosystems in Brazil

Abstract: Abstract-Although oil activities generate numerous forms of environmental impact on biological communities, studies of these impacts on Brazilian coastal ecosystems are rare. Results of tests for the content of oil in sediments and organisms indicate a substantially high rate of degradation. Results for uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bivalves suggested the recent occurrence of oil spills and that these organisms differed in their capabilities to bioconcentrate oil. The mangrove community has suf… Show more

“…in the bioremediation of soils and marine environments, which is related to the ability of the members of the genus to efficiently degrade petroleum hydrocarbons, not only through the catabolism of aliphatic and aromatic compounds but also under different temperature conditions, is widely recognized (Malachowsky et al, 1994;Silva et al, 1997;Dean-Ross et al, 2001;Alvarez, 2003;Nyer et al, 2003;Ruberto et al, 2005;Haritash and Kaushik, 2009). “…Recentemente Silva et al (1997) avaliaram o impacto da poluição por petróleo na costa brasileira utilizando dados compilados da literatura. Segundo os dados apresentados, os valores de concentração de óleo em sedimentos e de bioconcentração em peixes e moluscos indicam uma contaminação entre moderada e baixa, com exceção de amostras coletadas em eventos de poluição aguda.…”

“…Without urgent action to protect Brazil's coastal and offshore waters, the dire situation of serious impacts is likely to worsen with rapidly expanding and intensifying fishing pressure (Araújo & Martins 2009), pollution, conversion of coastal ecosystems to agricultural and urban areas (Copertino 2011), coastal development, and offshore mining and oil extraction (Da Silva et al 1997). Importantly, a systematic approach is needed to counteract the emerging trend of MPAs being placed where they are most expedient politically but also least effective in mitigating threats to the marine environment (CBD 2013).…”
