Optical‐photothermal infrared (O‐PTIR) spectroscopy is a recently developed technique that provides spectra comparable to traditional transmission FTIR spectroscopy with nanometric spatial resolution. Hence, O‐PTIR is a promising candidate for the analysis of historical paintings, as well as other cultural heritage objects, but its potential has not yet been evaluated. This work presents the first application of O‐PTIR to the analysis of cultural heritage, and in particular to an extremely small fragment from Van Gogh's painting L′Arlésienne (portrait of Madame Ginoux). The striking results obtained, including the detection of geranium lake pigments as well as the complete analysis of the stratigraphy, failed with other state‐of‐the‐art techniques, highlight the potential of this method. The integration of O‐PTIR to the study of cultural heritage opens to the possibility of decreasing the amount of sample extracted, therefore contributing to the preservation of the integrity of artworks while providing a complete characterization of the materials.

The possibility of using materials from the waste of agricultural products for the conservation of cultural and artistic heritage has led to important technological developments on mortars, plasters, colors, and other applications. In this experimental work, we investigated the binding properties of mucilage obtained from two different species of the genus Opuntia, both collected in Sicily, Italy: Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. and Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw. Through chemical acid hydrolysis, and subsequent spectroscopic analysis conducted at 13C-NMR, the main monosaccharide composition of both mucilage was studied, identifying considerable compositional differences. In fact, the mucilage of O. ficus indica had similar total amounts of arabinose (23.65%), galactose (20.87%), and glucose isomers (23.89%), while that of O. stricta was characterized by significant amounts of arabinose (36.48%) and galactose (32.31%) units. The samples were obtained by dispersing pigments on the mucilage and applying the obtained tempera by a brush onto both paper and chalk supports, in order to observe if the colors changed with different substrates. Colorimetric analysis, measuring ΔE, showed how the same pigment modifies its aspect depending on the binder used. After a two-week UV ageing process, pigments that had dispersed in O. stricta changed their aspect more than those dispersed in O. ficus-indica. Overall, it is also evident how ΔE data for organic pigments are higher than those for inorganic ones.

This study examines the enhancement of starch‐based bioplastic sheets for immobilizing natural dyes (ND) using plasma processes. The effects of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a binder for ND were also assessed. Starch substrates were treated with air plasma, air plus 1,7‐octadiene (OD) plasma, and air plus 2‐methy‐2‐oxazoline (Ox) plasma before immobilizing curcumin and telang NDs, followed by an OD overcoating. Surface morphology, wettability, chemical composition, tensile strength, and surface charge were analyzed. Results showed improved wettability and dye immobilization, particularly for telang with a PVA binder and plasma treatment. OD overcoating prevented dye leaching. Air plasma reduced, while OD plasma maintained the starch's negative charge. XPS analysis indicated increased oxygen and nitrogen presence after air plasma and enhanced aliphatic carbon from OD overcoating. Tensile strength was largely unaffected, but elongation at break was reduced, especially after air and OD plasma treatment.
