Abstract: The systematic use of nursing diagnoses in clinical practice, as well as the sharing of high-quality nursing data in large databases, may provide a considerable boost to the contribution of nursing to healthcare outcomes.

“…The implementation of NDs, as a part of the nursing process, has multiple benefits, such as, the improvement of critical thinking in nurses' clinical practice (Muller‐Staub, ) and a greater professional identity (Axelsson, Bjorvell, Mattiasson, & Randers, ) and autonomy (Elizalde & Almeida Mde, ). Moreover, the use of NDs leads nurses to a better planning of care with an improvement of the quality of interventions and patient outcomes (Sanson, Vellone, Kangasniemi, Alvaro, & D'Agostino, ). Some of these outcomes are better clinical management and therapeutic adherence in chronic patients (Azzolin et al., ; Cardenas‐Valladolid et al., ; Rojas‐Sanchez et al., ) and decreased drug‐related costs (Perez Rivas et al., ).…”

“…In relation to the impact that NDs have on health outcomes, important studies have been published in recent years which determine that nursing diagnoses have great potential to be independent predictors of several patient (quality of life and mortality) and organizational (length of hospital stay, hospital charges, amount of nursing care, discharge dispositions) outcomes (Castellan, Sluga, Spina, & Sanson, ; D'Agostino et al., ; Sanson et al., ). However, one of the main limitations of these studies is that they do not differentiate between the various types of NDs, let alone between the levels of complexity of these NDs.…”
