Impact of Nonthermal Plasma on Lipid Oxidation from the Perspective of Plasma Treatment Parameters and Plasma Species: Identification of Key Reactive Species

Danyang Liu,
Charlie Van Paepeghem,
Joke Sierens
et al.

Abstract: Nonthermal plasma is a mild processing technology for food preservation. Its impact on lipid oxidation was investigated in this study. Stripped methylesters were considered as a basic lipid model system and were treated by a multihollow surface dielectric barrier discharge. In dry air plasma, O 3 , • NO 2 , • NO 3 , and 1 O 2 were identified as the main reactive species reaching the sample surface. Treatment time was the most prominent parameter affecting lipid oxidation, followed by the (specific) power input… Show more

“…12 Plasma is an ionized gas composed of free electrons, ions, reactive atoms, neutral molecules, and photons in their fundamental or excited states and can be divided into lowtemperature plasma and high-temperature plasma. 13 As an emerging innovative disinfection technology, cold plasma exhibited great potential in decontamination of fresh fruits and vegetables as it showed high efficacy in microbial inactivation and minimally affected quality attributes of fresh produce. 14 Wu et al used dielectric barrier discharge plasma to control mango anthracnose, and the disease incidence and lesion diameter of mango decreased by 48.00 and 62.95% with 9 min treatment, respectively.…”

“…The joint performance between a good metal coating and a plastic sheet depends on good hydrophilicity and moderate surface roughness. 5 At present, the common surface pretreatment methods are the wet chemical method, 6,7 plasma treatment method, [8][9][10] surface grafting, [11][12][13][14][15] photocatalytic method, [16][17][18][19][20] and corona discharge. 21,22 Among these, the wet chemical method has received more attention compared with many other surface pretreatment methods.…”
