Impact of IT Capability on the Performance of Port Operation

Abstract: Based on the resource‐based view (RBV) and the transaction cost economics (TCE) theories, we study the impact of IT capability on the performance of port supply chain using an IT‐enabled transaction cost frontier model where the IT capability is modeled as a unique production input and as an endogenous transaction attribute as well. By examining the optimal levels of IT capability for different port systems from the viewpoint of production cost and transaction cost, we find theoretical evidence to explain why … Show more

“…The relational view theory states that firms evolve in relationships networks, which allow them to create value that could not be generated independently (Dyer & Singh, 1998). However, the resource‐based view (Barney, 1991) deals with the firm's sole resources as a source of competitive advantage (Wang et al., 2018). The relational view theory posits that the firm may develop new resources from interorganizational links that contribute to a competitive advantage.…”

“…Aside from the featured areas in section 3 for future research, there are several other possible pathways that could elicit interest from academics in the near to long term future. Notably, Sun and Xu (2018) explore the implications of ratings in service provisions where the service provider determines or influences the effort level required from the client as well as their own input, Shamir and Shin (2018) study the information sharing paradigm in trade association settings, Wang et al (2018) study the impact of IT on port performance from the theoretical lens of resource-based view and transaction cost economics, Granados et al…”

“…Drawing on resource-based view (RBV ), we argue that organizations may achieve a desired competitive advantage through the bundling of strategic resources that are valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable (Barney, 1991), while the CRBV suggests that this is dependent on specific conditions. Visibility is one of the desired capabilities in the humanitarian supply chain that is leveraged to reduce risk of poor coordination due to asymmetric information (Fawcett and Fawcett, 2013;Wang et al, 2017). In this study, we consider big data and predictive analytics (BDPA) as an organizational capability to improve visibility.…”
