Background The nursing profession requires ethical and legal regulations to guide nurses’ performance. Ethical climate plays a part in shaping nurses’ ethical practice. Therefore, ethico-legal aspects and ethical climate contribute to improving nurses’ ethical practice and competencies with reducing medical errors in hospital settings. Objective This study examined the effect of ethico-legal aspects and ethical climate on managing safe patient care and medical errors among nurses. Materials and methods A cross-sectional correlational study was carried out on 548 nurses. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires about nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects, ethical practice, competencies, ethical climate and experience with medical error. Results The main sources of nurses’ knowledge of ethical and legal aspects were undergraduate lectures, job experience and colleagues. Nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects, nurses’ ethical practice and competencies were insufficient. Nurses fairly perceived their ethical climate. Also, nurses experienced medical errors about 22.6% in their units. Nurses’ knowledge of ethical and legal aspects, as well as the ethical climate were positive predictors of inadequate nurses’ ethical practice and competencies. Additionally, nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects, ethical climate and practice had a negative influence on the occurrence of medical errors. Conclusion Enhancing nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects as well as ethical climate could significantly influence improving nurses’ ethical practice, competencies and reducing medical errors in the study units. Therefore, planning for enhancing the nurses’ ethico-legal learning and ethical climate seems to be mandatory.

Nowadays, Nosocomial infection and hospital-acquired infection are a worldwide problem that increases morbidity and mortality among the hospitalized patients and surges an additional cost. Rural nurses have a paramount role in preventing infection and providing high quality of patient care. Aim: This study existed to assess the effectiveness of an in-service education program for improving nurses' performance concerning the application of infection control measures in rural hospitals. Setting: This study was conducted in a selected government rural hospital in Fayoum Governorate, Egypt. Sample: A purposive sample of 100 nurses working in the rural hospital were included. Tools: A structured interview guide was used to assess nurses' level of knowledge, and an observation checklist to assess their performance level before and after program implementation. Results: Nearly half of nurses had correct performance concerning infection control pre-program and improved to around 88.0% post-program implementation. There were statistically significant differences between nurse's total knowledge scales and subscales in pre and post-program. Likewise, there were highly statistically significant differences associated with nurses' correct performance score level pre and post-program. Conclusion: In-service education intervention reported incredible improvement in nurses' knowledge and performance toward infection control measures in the rural hospital. Recommendations: There is a desire for endless training courses for nurses to validate nurses' knowledge, performance regarding utilization of standard safeguards of infection control in the rural hospital. Finally, at the community level, the government has to consider the distribution of continuous education programs to expand all health services and resources in rural areas.

While, Aliyu et al, (2014) conducted a study about "Knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing ethics and law among nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Bida" and indicated that the participating nurses possess considerably good knowledge, attitude and practice of nursing ethics and law.…”

Background: Success in an organization is the result of applying professional ethics that constitutes legitimate norms or standards that govern professional behavior. Professional ethics is an important part of nursing practice and it provides the standards of professional behavior for nurses. Indeed, nurses have an ethical obligation to contribute to a culture of civility and respect in the work setting. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of education program regarding professional nursing ethics on workplace civility. Methods: Quasi experimental design was utilized. Study Setting: the study was conducted in critical care units at Benha University Hospital. The study sample was: All the available staff nurses (176) working in the above mentioned setting. Tools of data collection: Three tools were used: (1) Professional nursing ethics knowledge questionnaire, (2) Observational checklist for professional nursing ethics, and (3) Clark Workplace Civility Index (WCI). Results: There was a highly statistical significant improvement in staff nurses' knowledge and practice regarding professional nursing ethics after implementation of program. There was a highly statistical significant improvement in staff nurses' level of workplace civility after implementation of program. Conclusion: The study concluded that there was highly statistically significant correlation between professional nursing ethics practice and workplace civility among staff nurses immediate post program (P<0.001). Recommendation: the study recommended that hospital must conduct on-job training and continuous education to address basic concepts in nursing ethics and their application in clinical practice for enhancing nurses' knowledge and practices about professional nursing ethics and replication of the same study on other categories of nursing staff is highly recommended to achieve generalizable results.
