Impact of household air pollution on human health: source identification and systematic management approach

Abstract: Household air pollution (HAP) is one of the most important global environmental and public health issues. As a result of changes in air composition due to rapid industrialization and urbanization, air quality is deteriorating and outdoor pollution is increasing daily. Simultaneously, poor ventilation, microbial growth, tobacco smoke, solid fuel use, and different toxic chemicals are causing deterioration in household air quality, which contributes significantly to the global burden of disease. “…Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are used for the development of several industrial products 1 . However, VOCs are toxic and can cause many short-term as well as long-term health problems if inhaled in excess amount [2][3][4][5] . There are several applications where selective detection of VOCs is important.…”

“…Their atmospheric degradation in both outdoor and indoor generates oxidation products in gas phase such as carbonyl compounds (aldehydes, ketones, etc.) [11], [12] or Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOA) [13]. VOCs include many sub-families of molecules: alkanes, alkenes, aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, ethers, esters, amines, etc.…”
