Objective: This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence on predictors of internalised HIV stigma amongst people living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.Method: PRISMA guidelines were used. Studies were identified through electronic databases, grey literature, reference harvesting and contacts with key researchers. Quality of findings was assessed through an adapted version of the Cambridge Quality Checklists.Results: A total of 590 potentially relevant titles were identified. Seventeen peer-reviewed articles and one draft book chapter were included. Studies investigated socio-demographic, HIV-related, intrapersonal and inter-personal correlates of internalised stigma. Eleven articles used cross-sectional data, six articles used prospective cohort data and one used both prospective cohort and cross-sectional data to assess correlates of internalised stigma. Poor HIV-related health weakly predicted increases in internalized HIV stigma in three longitudinal studies. Lower depression scores and improvements in overall mental health predicted reductions in internalized HIV stigma in two longitudinal studies, with moderate and weak effects respectively. No other consistent predictors were found. Conclusion:Studies utilizing analysis of change and accounting for confounding factors are necessary to guide policy and programming but are scarce. High-risk populations, other stigma markers that might layer upon internalised stigma, and structural drivers of internalised stigma need to be examined.

Objective: To analyze the somatic and affective-cognitive symptoms of depression according to the sex of people living with HIV/AIDS. Methods: Analytic study developed at specialized care services in Ribeirão Preto-SP, including a sample of 331 participants. To collect the data, a sociodemographic characterization tool and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) were used. Results: Among the interviewees, 50.4% were male, 52.1% of whom in the age range between 20 and 35 years. Higher education (p=0.001) and lower income (<0.001) were found for the women and more comorbidities (p=0.004) for the men. It was identified that the women presented higher mean depression scores in the somatic (p<0.001) as well as in the affective/cognitive domains (p<0.001). Conclusion: These study results appoint that the women present higher depressive symptom scores than the man, in the somatic as well as in the affective/cognitive domains of the BDI subscales. ResumoObjetivo: Analisar os sintomas somáticos e afetivo-cognitivos de depressão segundo o sexo de pessoas que vivem com HIV/AIDS. Métodos: Estudo analítico realizado em serviços de atendimento especializado em Ribeirão Preto-SP, com amostra de 331 participantes. Para coleta de dados foram utilizados instrumento de caracterização sociodemográfica e o Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI). Resultados: Dos entrevistados, 50,4% eram do sexo masculino e destes, 52,1% estavam na faixa etária de 20 a 35 anos. As mulheres apresentaram maior escolaridade (p=0,001) e menor renda (<0,001), e os homens apresentaram mais comorbidades (p=0,004). Identificou-se que as mulheres apresentaram maiores médias de escores de depressão, tanto no domínio somático (p<0,001) quanto no afetivo/cognitivo (p<0,001). Conclusão: Os resultados deste estudo apontam que as mulheres apresentam maiores escores de sintomatologia depressiva do que os homens, tanto no domínio somático quanto no afetivo/cognitivo das subescalas do IDB.

Cumulative lifetime adversity and social support were investigated as determinants of psychosocial adjustment (esteem, distress, hopefulness, positive outlook/future aspirations, and sense of purpose) over 12 months in 6–10‐years‐old HIV‐infected, HIV‐exposed uninfected and HIV‐unexposed uninfected children from Uganda. Each determinant and psychosocial adjustment indicator was self‐reported using standardized questionnaires administered at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Linear mixed effects models were used to relate time‐varying lifetime adversity and social support to psychosocial adjustment over 12 months. Regardless of HIV status, higher adversity predicted lower esteem (coefficient b = −2.98, 95% confidence interval (CI): [−4.62, −1.35]) and increased distress (b =3.96, 95% CI: [1.29, 6.62]) but was not associated with hopefulness, positive outlook or sense of purpose. Low social support predicted higher distress (b =9.05, 95% CI: [7.36, 10.73]), lower positive outlook (b = −10.56, 95% CI: [−2.34, −8.79]) and low sense of purpose (b = −9.90, 95% CI: [−11.44, −8.36]) over 12 months. Pragmatic interventions that enhance coping with adversity and provide emotional/instrumental support should be tested for effectiveness in promoting resilient psychosocial adjustment trajectory in vulnerable children.
