Impact of Gastric Banding on Eating Behavior and Weight

Abstract: LAGB results in significant reductions of weight, disinhibition and hunger during the first 9 months postoperatively. The change in eating behavior after surgery is independent of BMI and characterized mostly by elevated flexible control. Results indicate also changes of other behaviors that contribute to weight loss but are difficult to control.

“…Studies have shown that after gastric banding, patients experience increased fasting and post-prandial satiety levels [7] and decreased hunger scores [8][9][10]. Variations in gastrointestinal hormone levels have been proposed as a contributing mechanism for the weight reduction observed after bariatric surgery, and several clinical groups have investigated the effect of bariatric procedures on ghrelin, PYY, and GLP-1 levels.…”

“…Several studies have now shown that bariatric surgery, besides causing either food restriction and/or malabsorption, also induces a decrease in food intake [6][7][8][9][10] and changes metabolic pathways towards increased energy expenditure [11][12][13]. Moreover, there is growing evidence that bariatric surgery is able to interfere with the systems that regulate appetite and satiety [8][9][10]14].…”

“…14 Longitudinal studies have reported a more restrained eating pattern and decreased susceptibility to hunger following LAGB. [15][16][17] It has been shown that with LAGB, many foods of a coarser texture are unable to be consumed, as they will not transit past the LAGB. Even stable, successful patients do at times regurgitate foods of an inappropriate bolus consistency.…”

“…Otro estudio de seguimiento, un año después de la CB, reportó que el 24.2% de los pacientes persistían con esta conducta. 59,60 Un estudio retrospectivo reportó que 14 de 38 pacientes que recordaron haber presentado atracones antes de la cirugía continuaban presentándolos hasta 15 años después. La conducta se presentó principalmente en aquellos que ya tenían atracones previos y 4.5% los reportaron de novo.…”
