Abstract:The beef cattle industry recorded progressive growth in the last two decades. Despite this growth, suppliers are having difficulty to meet the domestic demand for beef. Continued strong growth of beef cattle production capacity depends on supplier profitability, which in turn will be influenced by primarily on availability of feedstuffs that constitutes a large proportion of the cost of production. The policy design and management of beef cattle production systems in Malaysia is challenging since imported beef is much more profitable. To this end, the research has applied systems approach that can be used to study and understand the behavior of a complex system over time which is characterized by interdependence, mutual interaction, information feedback and circular causality. The results indicate that low beef price and feed cost ratio would worsen beef cattle production. However, development of grazing and fodder area and genetic improvement boost the beef cattle production significantly by 2020. The results of this research support the idea that the best policies to obtain the targeted self-sufficiency level is through importation of animal for breeding, minimized rate of beef cattle mortality, increased fertility and the conduct of training in feed efficiency management.

The supply of palm oil products is still a central issue in international trade. Indonesia and Malaysia are major suppliers, contributing around 85% of world palm oil. Hence, both countries have an important role, as well as competing with each other in international trade. The palm oil products usually in high demand worldwide include Crude Palm Oil (CPO), which is the main and its derivative products such as Refined Bleached Deodorized (RBD) palm olein and Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD). Therefore, the research aims at assessing the competitiveness of palm oil products between Indonesia and Malaysia in international trade. The Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and products mapping methods were used in this assessment. The results show that, the value of RCA of Indonesian CPO showed a negative trend, although, still higher than Malaysia, though with positive trend. However, Indonesian RBD palm olein and PFAD have a positive trend compared with Malaysia. Upon using the method of products mapping, it was found that, the palm oil products of both countries were in group A. This is an indication that the products have comparative advantage and export specialization. Therefore, there is need for strategic policies, in both countries, for supporting oil palm activities at the downstream. This will enhance the production of derivative products with the capacity of also meeting demands in the international trade.

This research examines: 1) to what extent is the competitiveness of Indonesian palm oil, especially CPO and RPO in the Indian market compared to similar products from Malaysia; and 2) what factors determine the competitiveness of Indonesian CPO and RPO exports in the Indian market. The research method uses the RCA and RSCA indices as well as the regression function to determine the dominant factors that affect the competitiveness of Indonesian CPO and RPO exports in the Indian market with data ranging from 1995 to 2021. The competitiveness of Indonesian CPO exports in the Indian market shows a more stable trend in the period 1996 to 2021 and the competitiveness of Malaysian CPO in that period has decreased slowly. The competitiveness of Indonesian and Malaysian RPO exports in the Indian market decreased in the Indian market from 1996 to 2013, then there was a strengthening of competitiveness from 2014 to 2019. The competitiveness of Indonesian CPO exports to the Indian market is influenced by the volume of Malaysian CPO exports to India, the Indonesian CPO export tax, the CPO import tax in India, the real exchange rate of the Rupiah against the US Dollar, and the real price of CPO on the world market. Furthermore, the competitiveness of Indonesian RPO exports in the Indian market is influenced by the volume of Malaysian RPO exports to India, the real exchange rate of the Rupiah against the US Dollar, the export price of RPO, the price of soybean oil on the world market, and the RPO import tax in India.
