Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) plants sprayed with molybdenum (Mo) fertilizer produce Mo‐enriched seeds, which may increase yield in Mo‐poor soils. The challenge has been to produce Mo‐enriched seeds with less fertilizer. Split applications of Mo increase seed Mo content (SMoC), but the number of splits that maximize SMoC has not been studied sufficiently. In three sprinkler‐irrigated field trials, we evaluated the effects of split‐applied Mo fertilizer on SMoC and seed physiological quality. All treatments received NPK fertilizer at sowing. In two treatments, 69 kg ha−1 of urea‐N was top‐dressed or not applied. In six treatments, Na2MoO4·2H2O was foliar‐sprayed once at either 90 or 600 g ha−1 of Mo at the 4th trifoliolate leaf (V4) growth stage, or 600 g ha−1 was split equally at V4 and bud initiation (R5); V4, R5, and full flowering (R6); V4, R5, R6, and early pod formation (R7); or V4, R5, R6, and early and late R7 growth stages. Seed yield for each trial ranged from 3723 to 4621 kg ha−1. Site‐treatment interaction was significant for SMoC and seed germination (p < 0.001). SMoC ranged from 0.11 to 0.23 (only NPK‐fertilized), 1.81 to 3.31 (600 g ha−1, no split), and 5.22 to 6.29 μg (four splits). Four and five splits did not differ significantly for any variable. In two trials, seeds from 600 g ha−1 of Mo had a 3.9% higher germination than seeds from 90 g ha−1. In conclusion, SMoC increases as the number of splits increase up to four times. Additionally, Mo applied at 600 g ha−1 may improve seed germination rate.

Twelve elite lines of common bean were evaluated to identify diversity for morphological traits under rainfed conditions of Rawalakot, Azad Kashmir. The elite lines were found statistically different for the parameters under study. The elite line G-3990 produced highest grain yield per plant (23.45g) while lowest yield was recorded in NKB-1 (0.871g). G-3990 could be released as a variety in the mountainous regions for example in Azad Kashmir. Cluster analysis based on metric traits showed that the elite lines G-4258 and G-3661 having moderate grain yield per plant and 100-seed weight were grouped in same cluster. These lines could be utilized for the common bean improvement programme through breeding and hybridization. High heritability and genetic advance was estimated for 100-seed weight which indicated preponderance of additive genetic effects. For grain yield per plant, days to maturity and days to flowering the heritability estimates were moderate. It indicated a possible involvement of non-additive genes in their regulation.

The performance of most crop genotypes varies significantly depending on their genotype–environment interactions. Providing information on high-yielding and well-adapted common bean genotypes in a given environment is crucial for small-holder farmers to boost their productivity. A field trial was conducted at the Gendo and Wara locations over two consecutive seasons to understand genotype–environment interactions on grain yield and to identify and select common bean genotypes that were better adapted and had high yield potential for production. Ten genotypes were evaluated for their performance using a randomized complete block design with three replications. The AMMI and GGE models were used to identify superior genotypes regarding their mean grain yield performance. The AMMI analysis of variance results showed that grain yield was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) influenced by genotype–environment interactions. This shows that genotypes varied in grain yield mean performance across environments, indicating the possibility of selecting suitable genotypes with specific and broad adaptability. The sum of squares factor indicated that grain yield variation was contributed by the genotype (61.0%), followed by the environment (29.80%) and the genotype–environment interaction effect (9.20%) of the total variation. The AMMI and GGE biplot analysis results showed that SER-119 and SER-125 were identified as the best genotypes regarding their mean grain yield performance. Additionally, the genotype selection index analysis result indicated that SER-119 and SER-125 were stable and consistently exhibited high mean performance in all evaluated settings. Therefore, SER-119 and SER-125 are prime candidates for production in various agroecologies suitable for common bean cultivation in Dawuro zones. The use of tools like GGE biplots and AMMI analysis helped visualize the genotype–environment interactions, aiding in the selection of appropriate genotypes for both specific and wide adaptability.
