Impact of climate change and human activities on economic values produced by ecosystem service functions of rivers in water shortage area of Northwest China

Abstract: Climate change and human activities are affecting the ecological health of rivers and the economic value of its ecosystem services. Taking water quantity as the intermediate variable, we proposed a quantitative calculation method for the impact of climate change and human activities on the economic value produced by the ecosystem service functions of rivers. The framework mainly consists of three steps: firstly, we quantitatively determined the changes in the amount of water coming from rivers due to climate c… Show more

“…The IFTSP-based optimized water resources allocation scheme not only magnifies the profits from water consumption but also enhances water resource stability in the YRB. The rationality of water resource allocation is conducive to improving the economic benefits of water resources, reducing water shortages in different regions, and focusing on ecological and environmental benefits, while also improving the economic benefits of the system [82][83][84][85][86]. The IFTSP model developed in this work not only addresses rational water resource allocation, reduces water shortage in various locations, and emphasizes ecological and environmental advantages, but also enhances the system's economic returns.…”

“…Climate change has intensified the differences in regional water resource availability, resulting in regional water shortages [1][2][3]. The impacts of climate change are difficult to predict, but regular floods and droughts and the associated shortages of available water resources may cause problems in the water supply system.…”

“…The negative implications of global climate change are increasingly being examined in numerous fields, and both natural and human components of climate change are being addressed in the literature ( Palm and Thoresson, 2014 ; Rajapaksa et al, 2018 ). More precisely, the public’s perception of environmental issues and the degree of public concern are major factors affecting the effectiveness of climate change policies ( Cheng and Li, 2020 ). The government formulates environmental policies in China, which include administrative environmental policies, market-oriented environmental policies, and public engagement in environmental policies ( Yang et al, 2019 ).…”
