Impact of capacity value of renewable energy resources on RAPS system energy management

Abstract: Renewable energy resources are widely being utilised in remote area power supply (RAPS) systems. The capacity value of renewable energy resources in a RAPS system indicates the ability of renewable energy resources to serve the load demand in the RAPS systems. In this paper, the impact of capacity value of renewable resources on energy management of a RAPS system, while maintaining system reliability, is investigated. It is revealed that capacity value of renewable energy resources has direct influence on RAPS… Show more

“…The residual power of a microgrid is equal to the difference between the microgrid's generation and its load. The formula for calculating the residual power is presented in Equation (24) and an example of its calculations for 16:00 is stated in Equation (25). The LOLP, which is one of the most important reliability indices, is assumed to be equal to a specific value every hour.…”

“…The LOLE is the average number of hours for which the load is expected to exceed the available capacity while the LOEE is defined as the expected energy that will not be supplied when the load exceeds the available generation. In [54], based on the reliability metric of LOLE, capacity value is defined as the additional load that a system can serve by adding a new generator while maintaining the same system reliability level. Capacity value can be denoted as effective load carrying capability (ELCC).The authors also suggest utilisation of storage system in a RAPS system decreases the LOLE value or increases the energy supply reliability level as shown in Fig.…”

“…The diesel generator has a capacity of 275 kVA and PV generator is rated at 100 kW under STC. The size of the system components can be determined using the approach used in [16]. The component sizing is processed in an iterative manner until the system reliability denoted by loss of load expectation (LOLE) meets designated level.…”
