Impact of Artistic Gymnastics on Bone Formation Marker, Density and Geometry in Female Adolescents: ABCD-Growth Study

Abstract: Background To compare bone density accrual and markers of bone geometry and formation between female adolescents engaged and not engaged in artistic gymnastics (AGs). Methods This was a 12-month longitudinal study involving 20 female adolescents, including 10 controls and 10 gymnasts (AGs) aged 11 to 16 years. At baseline, the gymnasts had a minimum of 12 months of practice, and the controls reported no participation in any organized sport. Bone mineral density (BMD) wa… Show more

“…The recruitment catchment area of the ABCD, which was composed of 21 participating sites, encompasses more than 20% of the entire United States population of 9-10-year-old children. The ABCD applied a carefully designed sampling and recruitment process across various sites, described elsewhere [56,57,59,[61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74], to ensure that the sample is random and representative. Such local randomization efforts yielded a final overall ABCD sample that is a close approximation of national sociodemographic factors.…”

“…ABCD participants were recruited across 21 participating sites that encompass over 1/5 th of the U.S. population of 9-10-year-old children. The sampling and recruitment to the ABCD study are described elsewhere (ABCD;Alcohol Research: Current Reviews Editorial, 2018;Asaad & Bjarkam, 2019;Auchter et al, 2018;Beauchaine, 2020;Buscemi et al, 2018;Casey et al, 2018;Dick et al, 2019aDick et al, , 2019bDick et al, , 2019cExuperio et al, 2019;Feldstein Ewing et al, 2018;Fine et al, 2019;Garavan et al, 2018;Gray, Schvey, & Tanofsky-Kraff, 2019;Hoffman, Howlett, Breslin, & Dowling, 2018;Lisdahl et al, 2018;Lynch et al, 2019;Michelini et al, 2019;Werneck et al, 2018). The ABCD efforts in sampling yielded a final sample that approximates the national composition of race and ethnicity, age, sex, SES, and urbanicity for 9-10-year-old children.…”

“…The Physical Activity and Health Longitudinal (PAHL) study from A Monyeki et al [22], the Ellisras Longitudinal Study (ELS) from K Monyeki et al [23], and the Analysis of Behaviours of Children During Growth (ABCD-Growth study) [24] from Fernandes are three examples of recent longitudinal studies set up in other countries with new and modern techniques. They show that pediatric exercise science will bloom in the near future.…”
