Impact of adenotonsillectomy on the evolution of inflammatory markers

Abstract: Background Tonsils are first‐line host defence organs against pathogenic agents and participate in local and systemic immunity. Persistent increases in systemic inflammatory responses may contribute to associated morbidity. The aim of this study was to verify the short‐ and long‐term impact of adenotonsillectomy on the evolution of inflammatory markers in 3‐ to 9‐year‐old children. Methods A prospective and longitudinal study was conducted over 1 year in 29 children who underwent tonsillectomy due to either ch… Show more

“…Our study demonstrated that AT as a procedure to correct adenotonsillar hypertrophy, improved disease severity as well as local and systemic inflammation, without an obvious improvement in obesity. These findings indicated some degree of inflammation caused by adenotonsillar hypertrophy and concomitant OSA, which was supported by a recent study [55]. However, despite being an effective and first-line treatment, the disease resolution rate of AT remained suboptimal [15,16].…”

“…In another study [ 51 ] the authors analysed effects of adenotonsillectomy on the evolution of inflammatory markers in patients with palatine tonsillitis, palatine tonsil hypertrophy, and the 2 combined. They found reduction of IL-1 and IL-10 levels after tonsillectomy and higher levels of these cytokines in the tonsillectomy group versus the control group.…”

“…In the combined UPPP and tonsillectomy, the tonsillectomy study illustrated that surgery has a protective effect in the case of cardiac problems, dementia, etc. [ 13 , 21 , 22 ] performed in Taiwan and Korea [ 23 ]. There were also studies showing the impact of adenotonsillectomy on the evolution of inflammatory markers that decreases tonsillitis related infection.…”
