Impact, disease outbreak and the eco-hazards associated with pharmaceutical residues: a Critical review

Abstract: In the last three decades, pharmaceuticals research has increased tremendously to offer safe and healthy life, though it emerged as a new threat to the environment. These pharmaceutical residues pose a threat to the public health, and ecological balance, particularly in surface water located in agricultural catchments are facing more serious challenges. If these pharmaceutical residues left untreated could contaminate soil, water and may lead to serious outbreaks. However, many conventional treatments are inte… Show more

“…To ensure the yield of animals in the livestock industry, farmers add antibiotics to the feed to reduce the incidence rate of animal diseases [122]. However, these actions result in the presence of large quantities of antibiotic residues in the environment, which destroy the original ecological balance and pose a threat to public health [123,124]. Shin et al determined the cDNA sequence of a BSF-derived AMP (attacin-like) by rapid amplification of cDNA ends-polymerase chain reaction (RACE-PCR) and DNA sequence analysis [58].…”

“…This time period of survival in normal environments might be relatively shorter, but considering the volume and the rate of generation of municipal and biomedical wastes, it poses a reasonable threat. Normal biomedical effluent discharge from hospitals is expected to have persistent viral particles (Khan et al 2021). Considering the massive waste load municipal entities are expected to process, and the fact that SARS-CoV-2 may remain viable for up to 48 h in untreated sewage, infection risks for WWTP workers are very high.…”

“…The influencing parameters, namely packing rate, HRT, mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration, were considered (Table 1). The influencing parameters used for detecting the system's efficiency in AZX removal (%) [37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44]. In the current study, for lowering the chemical waste and considering the number of the experimental run, a Central Composite Design (CCD) (one of the RSM family designs) was used to analyze the experiments by Design-Expert 13.0 software.…”
