Immunopathology of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy

Abstract: Eight patients with angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy have been studied by a variety of immunological and pathological techniques. They exhibited a spectrum of immunological reactivities that, in this small series, could be roughly correlated with survival. Those patients with relative B-cell predominance as shown by cell marker studies, histologically showed large numbers of plasma cells, and this pattern was associated in 3 of our patients with a survival of 3 years or more. T-cell predominance or both B- a… Show more

“…In one report, all seven patients studied were found to have lymph nodes with both cell-surface and intracytoplasmic polyclonal immunoglobulins [13]. Four patients have been reported to have lymph node cells with markers characteristic of T cells [77,101,104].…”

“…In-vivo studies have shown that macrophages play an active role in the proliferation of fibroblasts and endothelial cells (Leibovich and Ross, 1975) and also that vascular proliferation occurs at the same time as mononuclear cell infiltration (Polverini el al., 1977). These observations coupled with the histological results presented, suggest that the ability of tissue implants and tumour extracts to induce angiogenesis in the C A M is related to their ability to invoke a host mononuclear infiltrate at the implantation site.…”

“…Angiogenesis has also been described in mice following the intradermal injection of immuno-competent lymphocytes into histoincompatible recipients (Sidky and Auerbach, 1975). In man, angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AILD), a condition in which the lymphoid tissues show features of disturbed reactivity and in which malignant lymphoma may develop (Frizzera, Moran and Rappaport, 1974;Jones et al. 1978) is also characterised by the proliferation of small arborising blood vessels.…”
