Immunomodulatory therapy using a pediatric dialysis system ameliorates septic shock in miniature pigs

Abstract: Background: Application of the immunomodulatory Selective Cytopheretic Device (SCD) to enhance renal replacement therapy and improve outcomes of acute kidney injury in pediatric patients is impeded by safety concerns. Therapy using a pediatric hemodialysis system could overcome these limitations. Methods: Yucatan minipigs (8–15kg) with induced septic shock underwent continuous hemodiafiltration with the CARPEDIEM pediatric hemodialysis system using regional citrate anti… Show more

“…9 The SCD demonstrates a high level of specificity for leukocyte adherence, exhibiting an approximate average neutrophil to monocyte ratio of ~70:30 (based across data from various studies) and a lower affinity for other immune cell variants, including eosinophils and T cells. 1,3,[9][10][11][12][13] The implications of this mechanism underscore a modulation of the heightened activity of activated leukocytes. This fosters the body's inherent reparative mechanisms, steering toward homeostatic equilibrium, a more stable clinical status, and subsequent recuperation.…”
