Immunomodulatory activity of Bengkoang (Pachyrhizus erosus) fiber extract in vitro and in vivo

Abstract: Bengkoang (Pachyrhizus erosus (L.) Urban) is one of the most popular edible root vegetables in Indonesia. Bengkoang contains fairly large amounts of carbohydrates and crude fiber. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the immunomodulatory effect of the bengkoang fiber extract (BFE) in vitro and in vivo. BFE was prepared by heating the powder of bengkoang fiber suspended in distilled water at 121°C for 20 min. BFE facilitated IgM production by the human hybridoma cell line HB4C5 cells. In addition, produc… Show more

“…It is rich in vitamin C, fructooligosaccharides (FOSs), and inulin, a soluble fiber can serve as a potential prebiotic, and appreciable levels of nutraceuticals [16] [17]. Jicama also has other biological benefits such as immunomodulatory activity [18], reducing the risk of colon cancer [19], and anti-diabetic properties [20]. Winter melon (Benincasa hispida (Thunb.)…”

“…35,36 IL-2 can promote the proliferation and differentiation of T lymphocytes, induce cytotoxic cells with cytotoxic activity, and induce and enhance the activity of killer T cells, monocytes and macrophages. 37,38 TNF-a derives from mononuclear phagocyte, making signicant effects on promoting tumor cell apoptosis and cell necrosis. 39 As for IFN-g, it exhibits antiviral, immunomodulatory and antitumor properties.…”

“…Being produced cytokines, IL-2, IL-6, IFN-γ, TNF-α and other inflammatory mediators play an important role in the body's immune response. IL-2 is an important immune factor, which can promote immune cell proliferation and differentiation (Kumalasari et al, 2014). It has many immune potentiating effects and exhibits high cytotoxic activity against autologous tumor cells (Yuan et al, 2006).…”
