“…Overall, the three most common oral thrush lesions reported in SEA studies (13 cohorts; Consistent with other studies, several SEA studies reported the detection of pseudomembranous candidiasis as a prognostic indicator for advancing HIV infection. 7,26 These findings are almost similar to studies in other geographical region, 9 whereby erythematous candidiasis (24%), pseudomembranous candidiasis (14%) and angular cheilitis (6%) have been identified as the most prevalent oral thrush manifestations in HIV-infected individuals.…”

“…The speciation of Candida yeasts in oral thrush patients was only reported in three out of 22 SEA studies reviewed in this paper (Table 1). 18,24,26 C. albicans was identified as the most common species in all studies, except in a Cambodian study, whereby C. tropicalis and C. krusei were identified as the most common oral pathogens in HIV-infected patients with and without antifungal treatment, and healthy individuals. 24 C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and C. krusei were regarded as rare isolates obtained from prenatally HIV-infected and HIV-negative children with oral candidiasis.…”

“…The JakCCANDO study conducted in Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia ( Wulandari et al., 2017 ) recruited 82 adults with horizontally-acquired HIV infection ( Estiasari et al., 2015 , 2020 ), with <200 CD4 T-cells/μl, a Karnofsky performance score 70–100, living in Jakarta, and providing written and informed consent to participate in the study. Participants with a history of head injury, stroke, recurrent seizures, severe depression (Hamilton Depression Scale) ( Estiasari et al., 2015 ), neurological deficits which may interfere with neurocognitive evaluation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and current use of illicit drugs were excluded.…”

“…Candida infection in HIV patients is one of the so-called AIDS-defining illnesses. In absence of antiretroviral therapy, 57% of patients develop oropharyngeal candidiasis, typically when T cell CD4 + count is below 200 cells/m 3 [ 62 ].…”
