Immunohistologic Studies of Carcinoma of the Prostate

Abstract: Interepithelial antibodies reactive with autologous (human) and heterologous (monkey) prostatic tissue have been demonstrated by the method of indirect immunofluorescence in an eluate of carcinomatous prostatic tissue obtained at autopsy from a patient with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the prostate who exhibited remission of both his local prostatic malignancy and osteolytic lesions of the cervical spine following cryotherapy of his primary prostatic tumour. Elution of antibodies from malignant prostatic tissu… Show more

“…IC IF staining could be differentiated from similar IF patterns which are obtainable with sera from individuals with high titers of blood group isohemagglutinins by their stability following absorption with blood group-specific substances A and B. The finding of BMZ antibodies was partic ularly interesting in view of the suggested association of manifestations of bullous pem phigoid and the occurrence of internal malignancy.Immunofluorescent (IF) studies of serum specimens of patients with car cinoma of the prostate (CaP) have disclosed the presence in some of these patients of anti-: nuclear [4-6], bile canalicular [5], and epithelial [1,2,4,6] antibodies. Initially, the antiepithelial antibodies were observed to react with the cytoplasmic membrane (CM) of prostatic secretory epithelial cells [6], However, recently completed studies directed at attempting to elucidate the possible tissue -and species -specificity of these antibodies disclosed that…”

“…disclosed, as described previously (12), the presence of antiprostatic IgG antibodies. These antibodies were immunohistologically indistinguishable from those observed prior and up to 10 days post-operatively (7,10). Elution of antibodies reactive with prostatic tissue provides preliminary evidence that prostatic tissue (tu mour?…”

“…The cross-reactivity of human and monkey prostatic tissue-specific antigens [2], and the identification of antibodies to human prostatic fluid [3] and in patients with prostatic cancer [4,5] when reacted with monkey prostatic tissue have been observed. The monkey thus appeared to be a suitable potential experimental model for the induction of prostatic cancer and the subsequent evaluation of the treatment of prostatic malignancy by cryotherapy.…”
