Immunohistochemical Staining of Surfactant Proteins A and B in Skin of Psoriatic Patients Before and After Narrow-Band UVB Phototherapy

Abstract: SP-A and SP-B positivity is increased in psoriatic skin and reduced after NB-UVB therapy. Absence of SP-A in suprabasal layers after NB-UVB therapy is associated with better response and shorter duration of treatment.

“…In a rather early study by Mo et al, SP-A appeared in the stratum corneum and stratum granulosum, while SP-D was distributed in all epidermal layers and the dermis (37). Aiad et al found that SP-A was mainly detected in the basal layer, which was agreed upon by Akman (63,64). SP-D was found to be restricted in the basal layer, rather than diffusely spread, in later research by Hohwy et al (44).…”

“…This premise was further supported by the findings of Aiad et al in 2012 (Aiad et al, 2012), when they studied the skin of patients with psoriasis and demonstrated that in unaffected skin, SP-A was restricted to the basal layer; however, in psoriatic skin, it predominantly appeared in suprabasal layers. Dermal inflammatory cells showed SP-A in about half the cases studied.…”
