Immunohistochemical Organization of the Forebrain in the White Sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus

Abstract: The distribution of substance P (SP), leucine-enkephalin (LENK), serotonin (5HT), dopamine (DA), and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) was examined in the forebrain of the white sturgeon in order to evaluate several anatomical hypotheses based on cytoarchitectonics, and to gain a better understanding of the evolution of the forebrain in ray-finned fishes. The subpallium of the telencephalon has the highest concentration of the neuropeptides SP and LENK, allowing the pallial-subpallial border to be easily distinguished… Show more

“…Nucleus Vd contains a number of striatal markers [Piñuela and Northcutt, 2007], as it does in other ray-finned fishes. The most lateral part of Nieuwenhuys' Vd was termed Vl by Northcutt and Braford, who noted its heavy secondary olfactory input.…”

“…The most salient features reported include: 1) Dm displays a higher number of somata and fibers positive for tyrosine hydroxylase than the rest of the pallium; and 2) the ventral portion of the postcommissural portion of Dp has the highest concentration of fibers positive for substance P in the pallium [Adrio et al, 2002;Piñuela and Northcutt, 2007]. Thus the zone recognized as Dp and in receipt of olfactory projections (see below) displays two different patterns of substance P distribution: precommissural portion, relatively sparse; postcommissural portion, relatively dense.…”

“…THir, CB-ir, and CR-ir immunoreactive cells were also reported in the granule cell layer of sturgeons (Piñuela and Northcutt, 2007;Adrio et al, 2002;Graña et al, 2012). Olfactory bulb connections were studied in Polypterus by Nauta and Fink-Heimer techniques (Braford and Northcutt, 1974) and also with neuronal tracers (Holmes and Northcutt, 2003) showing mitral cells located within the external cellular layer that project mainly to the ipsilateral dorsal subdivision of P1 (P1d).…”

“…In the hypothesis of an extended Dm (B), most of Dp lies beneath Dm and DdþDl, and its border is marked by the dotted line. The relative positions of the pallial divisions in the hypothesis of a restricted Dm are based on a reconstruction by Piñuela and Northcutt (2007), whereas the positions of the pallial divisions for the extended hypothesis are based on a reconstruction using the transverse sections of the telencephalon published by Huesa et al (2006). For abbreviations, see list.…”
