Immunoglobulin coating of faecal bacteria in inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Compared with healthy controls, patients with IBD had an increased percentage of immunoglobulin-coated faecal anaerobic bacteria, both in active disease and shortly after remission. These results support the concept that there may be a breakdown of mucosal tolerance to the commensal gut flora in IBD.

“…Therefore, more IgG against gut bacteria will circulate in the bloodstream, and combined with the ulcerated gut mucosa, more IgG may leak into the lumen of the gut. This leads to increased IgG coating of commensal bacteria in the feces of IBD patients (31). It is not known what triggers this IgG coating or if the serum-derived IgG response indicates a history of contact with certain species.…”

“…It is not known what triggers this IgG coating or if the serum-derived IgG response indicates a history of contact with certain species. van der Waaij et al (31) indicated that there may be a relationship between the amount of IgG coating and disease activity. Objective measurement of the disease activity is difficult, even for specialized physicians using invasive techniques.…”

“…One can speculate that interaction between SIgA and commensals plays a role in modulating the colonization by the microbiota in steady-state conditions. Moreover, in vivo coating of commensal bacteria by SIgA has been described in analysis of human feces (12,13). Because abundant intestinal secretion of natural SIgA with unknown specificity has also been described, we speculated that the latter can be involved in binding to commensals (8, 14 -16).…”
