Immunodiffusion and Immuno-histochemical Investigations on the Reactivity of Oxide Ceramic Middle-Ear Implants

Abstract: Oxide ceramic materials (partial and total ossicular replacement prostheses) have been implants of preference for the reconstruction of the ossicular chain because of their excellent biocompatibility. The reaction on the surface of the implants takes place at three biodynamic levels according to the model of Stern’s bilayer. We investigated the adsorption of proteins, which is determined by the cellular reaction and degradation to the surface using radial immunodiffusion and immunohistochemical methods. First,… Show more

“…Use of zirconium for biomedical applications is steadily growing [ 146 ], e.g. in dental implants [ 147 , 148 ], total knee and hip replacements [ 149 ] and middle-ear ossicular chain reconstruction surgery [ 150 ]. Like Al III , Zr IV readily forms polymeric oxygen-bridged complexes (e.g.…”

“…Although the combination of ''ceramic-polyethylene'' has proven to be clinically reliable in artificial joints over a period of ten years, 13 there is little experience in using these materials in a blood-contacting device. Although a few studies have been published with regard to ce-ramic-protein interactions, 14,15 this study was undertaken to investigate protein adsorption, especially albumin, IgG, fibrinogen, and fibronectin, onto ceramic surfaces.…”

“…Na literatura observamos que, para a avaliação da biocompatibilidade do enxerto em relação ao tecido hospedeiro, existem vários métodos. Têm-se: cultura de células e tecidos, análise histoquímica 12 , estudos bioquímicos 13,14 , estudos histológicos e estudos de perfusão de todo um órgão. Existem também medidas de peso, rigidez, elasticidade, alongamento, quebras na mecânica e alterações na superfície que podem ser revelados na microscopia eletrônica.…”
