Immunity of power line communications (PLC) in disturbed networks

Abstract: -This paper presents an analysis of electromagnetic immunity of energy metering devices, using broadband power line communications (PLC) in low voltage (LV) supply networks with high levels of disturbance. Several tests have been carried out to characterize the behavior of PLC modems and couplers in presence of the most common types of disturbances and electromagnetic interferences (EMI) which can be expected in LV distribution networks. The method exposed allows repeat the tests with different modems, communi… Show more

“…The results show that SDEMs are immune to this type of interference. The immunity of the energy meter using a PLC in disturbed LV networks was assessed in [4] after considering five different types of environmental electromagnetic interference (EMI) caused by the power line.…”

“…These small LED lighting systems require a lower-cost solution, however, for 0-10 V, pulse-width modulation (PWM) control, digital addressable lighting interface (DALI) [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] and other remote-control schemes, and additional communication lines must be laid, which is unfavorable for installation and maintenance and costs more. Power line communication (PLC) [15][16][17][18] and the remote-control scheme of micropower wireless communication have advantages in practical applications due to the convenient installation. However, the cost of such a solution is still high, which is not conducive to its promotion.…”

“…Modern electronics, for instance power-line modems and smart meters, can be directly connected to the power-line network. The integrated, digital, high-frequency operation trend makes these electronics more sensitive to electromagnetic (EM) disturbance, and correspondingly increases their vulnerability when the power-line network is exposed to EM environment (Meng et al, 2005;Vallbe et al, 2011).…”
