Four Theileria annulata cell lines were characterised at low passage levels using two polymorphic markers and then used to infect calves. Their virulence seemed to be related to the number of genotypes present within the cell line. In all, 3 of the 4 cell lines were cultured up to passage 100 or 200 and inoculated into calves. Their characterisation using the same markers indicated that the attenuation was related to a reduction in the parasite polymorphism down to a single genotype. The immunogenicity of the three attenuated cell lines was assessed in calves using two types of challenge. Optimal protection was observed against homologous challenges. The level of immunity to heterologous challenges appeared to decrease with attenuation and seemed to depend on the cell line used.

The influence of genes on the uptake by rice plants of certain macro-and micronutrients (calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and zinc) was studied, by diallel (7 x 7) analysis, in P deficient upland soil. Both additive and dominant gene effects, with a preponderance of the former, were found to be responsible for the uptake of all the elements studied. Local varieties were found to be not only good yielders but also much more efficient in element uptake. Heterotic effects were observed in various crosses with respect to the uptake of all the aforementioned nutrients. Statistical analysis indicated that while the uptake of iron and zinc were negatively correlated, the uptake of manganese and calcium, manganese and zinc, calcium and magnesium and calcium and zinc were positively correlated.

Journal homepage: http://www.ijcmas.com Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease globally that causes huge economic losses to the livestock owners and is of public health significance. Brucellosis in animals is endemic in India. In sheep and goats, Brucellosis is mainly caused by Brucella melitensis whereas Brucella ovis causes the disease in sheep. The symptoms in infected sheep and goats are abortions, stillbirths and the birth of weak offsprings. Animals that abort may retain the placenta. Sheep and goats usually abort only once, but reinvasion of the uterus and shedding of organisms can occur during subsequent pregnancies. Several studies have been carried out on seroepidemiology of caprine and ovine Brucellosis in India. The tests commonly used for diagnosis of Brucellosis are the milk ring test, Rose Bengal Plate Test (RBPT), Standard Tube Agglutination Test (STAT), Microtiter Plate Agglutination Test (MAT) and ELISA. The RBPT is a rapid screening test for the diagnosis of Brucellosis. The sensitivity of RBPT is very high (>99%) but the specificity can be low and it could sometimes give a false positive result. Its positive predictive value is low and a positive test result requires confirmation by a more specific test.
