Immune Reconstitution: The Foundation for Safe Living After an Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract: With increasing frequency, oncology nurses are providing long-term care to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients in nontransplantation settings. This may be a result of more patients receiving HSCTs, recipients living longer, and recipients' desire to return to their hometowns as soon as possible. Although critical to patients' initial recovery after HSCT, immune reconstitution also must remain a priority of oncology nursing care long beyond the date of discharge from a transplantation cent… Show more

“…Although pretransplantation testing is designed to preclude patients with baseline renal, liver, cardiac, and pulmonary dysfunction from transplantation, end-organ complications may occur during the pre-engraftment phase of the transplantation process (Laffan & Biedrzycki, 2006;Pallera & Schwartzberg, 2004). HDM and AHSCT are associated with expected side effects such as alopecia, gastrointestinal (GI) toxicities, and bone marrow ablation.…”

“…Infection is a major source of treatmentrelated mortality and morbidity in patients with cancer receiving HSCT (Munshi & Montgomery, 2000). Infection has been reported as the leading cause of nonrelapse mortality among allogeneic HSCT recipients (Laffan & Biedrzycki, 2006).…”
