Immune profiling of Alzheimer patients

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by extracellular senile plaques in the brain, containing amyloid-β peptide (Aβ). We identify immunological differences between AD patients and age-matched controls greater than those related to age itself. The biggest differences were in the CD4+ rather than the CD8+ T cell compartment resulting in lower proportions of naïve cells, more late-differentiated cells and higher percentages of activated CD4+CD25+ T cells without a Treg phenotype in AD patients. Changes to CD… Show more

“…In addition, changes in lymphocyte subsets have been observed in patients with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. Patients with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease showed lower percentages of B cells [28,47] but increased expansion of late-differentiated T cells (CD28-), especially in CD4+ cells [48,49,50]. These data are in line with our findings and give further support to the role of peripheral lymphocytes in human cognition.…”

“…AD is also a systemic inflammatory disease and shows elevated Th1-mediated inflammation, which is similar to autoimmune diseases (D'Andrea, 2005;Pellicano et al, 2012). The similarity between AD and autoimmune diseases in immunology suggests there are certain similarities in epidemiology.…”

“…Alzheimer (AD) and Parkinson (PD) diseases are age-related neurodegenerative conditions characterized by neuronal loss in hippocampus and substantia nigra, respectively. There are concepts supporting that AD and PD pathogenesis could be originally related to systemic immune system dysfunction (42). The frequency of NK cells seems unmodified in the blood of AD patients (43,44).…”
