Immune persistence after pertussis vaccination

Abstract: Pertussis is one of the most prevalent vaccine-preventable diseases worldwide. The true infection rate is significantly higher than the reported incidence rate. An increased prevalence of pertussis in older populations has been found, mainly caused by waning immunity after vaccination. Vaccine-induced immunity differs due to variation in vaccine content, schedule and coverage. Protection following acellular pertussis vaccines has been suggested to wane faster than whole cell pertussis vaccines. However, long-t… Show more

“…Therefore, the identification of antigenic proteins for a new candidate vaccine is in high demand. The OMV-based vaccines are attractive and useful tools for the complete coverage of vaccination against pertussis while there is still a high prevalence of pertussis among populations of all ages in Iran (19). Here we designed a study to investigate the OMV's of a vaccine strain and a dominant wild type strains of Bp isolates from Iran.…”

“…Also, mutations in pertussis toxin as well as pertactin genes are considered as important causes of waning of the vaccine immunity (25). Moreover, prevalence of pertussis outbreaks in adolescents and adults have been revealed even in countries in which the wP or aP vaccination programs have been conducted (19,26).…”

“…Acellular pertussis vaccines provide shorter protection than whole-cell vaccines and natural infection. As immunity wanes in adolescents, young and older adults, they become a reservoir (Chen and He, 2017). This resurgence of cases offers an opportunity for resistant B. pertussis strains to circulate.…”

“…Two commercial pertussis-containing vaccines are licensed for immunization on the Chinese market. The first primary dose is inoculated at 3 months (Huang et al, 2017) following the 3-dose primary series schedule recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), and a booster dose is given !6 months after the last primary dose (Chen and He, 2017). Although the vaccination rate of B. pertussis in China is high, the incidence of pertussis has increased in recent years, and pertussis remains a serious disease in Chinese children (Xu et al, 2014).…”
