Immobilization of Hexavalent Chromium Using Self-Compacting Soil Technology

Abstract: A study of immobilization of hexavalent chromium in the form of Na2CrO4 salt by self-compacting soils (SCS) is presented. Carbofill E additive was used as SCS binder. The efficiency of immobilization of Cr (VI) was evaluated by washing out chromium compounds from SCS samples. The influence of the nature of the soil and the content of Carbofill E and Na2CrO4 in the SCS samples on the efficiency of Cr (VI) immobilization was studied. It was found that the nature of the soil and the content of Carbofill E in the … Show more

“…The first two principal dimensions CCA1 and CCA2 explained 35.9% and 18.5 % of the total variance, respectively. A positive correlation was observed between sand and Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Fe; clay and Al, V, and Ni; Silt and Al, Ni, and V. Here, one is expecting Cr to be positively correlated to soil texture ( Kim & Dixon, 2002 ; Lacroix et al, 2021 ; Rudzionis et al, 2022 ), however, due to high Fe concentration, the pXRF efficiency in reporting the actual amount of Cr declines due to a lower absorption edge in energy than the fluorescent peak of Fe (EPA, 2007). Such an effect can be corrected mathematically using fundamental parameter coefficients related to particle size and matrix effects.…”

“…Heavy metals can have serious environmental impacts and substantial public health concerns, as these heavy metals can accumulate in aquatic life through bioaccumulation and may travel towards the top of the food chain up to human beings through the process of biomagnification [24]. Exposure to heavy metals over a longer period of time may result in various health issues, including, but not limited to, neurological disorders and organ damage [25].…”

“…The latter will contribute to the decarbonisation vision of the concrete industry by reducing the use of PC and saving carbon emissions. It is believed that the functions of micro fillers in concrete are to increase concrete density, influence capillary porosity and decrease water requirement and shrinkage strains (Rudžionis et al, 2005) as well as to prevent segregation in highly workable mixes and to fill micro voids, creating more dense microstructure, particularly the interfacial zone (ITZ), and increasing impermeability (Vaganov et al, 2017). Fillers also improve the rheological behavior of concrete due to the increase in paste volume and distance between aggregate particles as filler have densities lower than PC (Nguyen et al, 2018).…”
