Immobilization of Brønsted basic hexaniobate on the Lewis acidic zirconia using an emulsion assisted self-assembly strategy for synergistic boosting of nerve agent simulant decontamination

Abstract: The hydrolytic decontamination of organophosphorus never agents can be promoted by Brønsted bases or Lewis acids, but the fabrication of catalytic materials with both Lewis acidic centers and Brønsted base...

“…Phenolic compounds and chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are two types of typical organic hazardous substances found in water environments or wars [7][8][9]. Among them, mustard gas (CEES: 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide) as one of the notorious CWAs can cause severe skin diseases, strong irritation to the respiratory tract, and even death [10][11][12]. On the other hand, monohydric phenols (such as phenol, 2-chlorophenol, and m-cresol) are typical toxic pollutants that pose a threat to human health through neurotoxicity and reproductive toxicity [13][14][15].…”

“…Polyoxoniobates (PONbs) are a subclass of polyoxometalates (POMs). Their high negative charge density and basic surface oxygen atoms make them a kind of unique Brønsted base catalysts. The Lindqvist-type {Nb 6 O 19 } is a highly stable and readily prepared PONb, which can be viewed as a super-octahedron composed of six edge-sharing {NbO 6 } octahedra (Scheme ). In the known POMs, {Nb 6 O 19 } has the highest negative charge density and is the most basic polyanion cluster. The experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the μ 2 -bridging O atoms rather than the terminal ones tend to combine with protons in both solution and solid state. , Moreover, {Nb 6 O 19 } is less corrosive relative to traditional inorganic strong bases (such as NaOH and KOH).…”

“…8–20 Among many toxic chemicals, chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are extremely dangerous and can cause critical long-term damage to humans and ecosystems. 10–40 Isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate and bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide are the most well-known highly toxic CWAs. Isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate, commonly known as sarin or GB, is a potent G-type organophosphorus nerve agent.…”

“…Consequently, the development of efficient methods for the adsorption or detoxification of CWAs is of utmost importance. 10–40 Specifically, the urgent need for the development of porous materials for the effective adsorption of CWAs cannot be overstated, as it is critical for human protection. Porous carbons, zeolites, and MOFs have demonstrated significant potential for CWA adsorption.…”
