Imidazo [1,2-a] Pyrimidine Derivatives as Effective Inhibitor of Mild Steel Corrosion in HCl Solution: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

Abstract: The inhibitory performance of imidazole [1,2-a] pyrimidine derivatives, namely, 2,4-diphenylbenzo [4,5]imidazo [1,2-a]pyrimidine (DPIP) and 2-(4-octylphenyl)-4-phenylbenzo [4,5]imidazo [1,2-a]pyrimidine (OPIP), against mild steel corrosion in 1 mol L−1 HCl solution was studied by weight loss at different temperatures, potentiodynamic polarization curves (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and surface analysis technology. “…[7][8][9] The most widely used organic inhibitors take the isolated pair electrons of O, N, S, P and π electrons in aromatic rings as their main adsorption centres, such as Mannich bases, 10,11 Schiff bases 12,13 and imidazoline derivatives. 14,15 In addition, a large number of studies have indicated that alkyl alcohol derivatives [16][17][18] and alkyl pyridine [19][20][21] have good corrosion inhibition performance on metals in acidic media. For instance, the inhibition efficiency of tetradecyl pyridinium bromide (TDPB) was up to 97.4% (1mM) on aluminium in 1 M HCl at 20 C 22 and proparyl alcohol was 99% (0.107 M) on carbon steel in 15% HCl at 30 C. 23 As mentioned above, both propargyl alcohol and tetradecyl pyridinium bromide exhibit excellent corrosion inhibition properties, and propargyl alcohols behave very well as inhibitors in strongly acidic media.…”
