Materiais metálicos são amplamente utilizados na indústria como material de construção de equipamentos e tubulações. Naturalmente sofrem desgastes por reações químicas e eletroquímicas com ou sem esforço mecânico conhecidas como corrosão, formando produtos termodinamicamente estáveis. Este fenômeno é grave e de grande desafio em vários setores. Várias abordagens e métodos têm sido rigorosamente estudados e implementados para mitigar a corrosão. Uma das medidas mais comuns e eficazes para mitigar a corrosão em metais e proteger suas superfícies é o uso de inibidores de corrosão. Em particular, alguns compostos orgânicos se destacam na inibição da corrosão em ligas e metais em meio ácido. A maioria dos inibidores de corrosão orgânicos são aqueles que contêm heteroátomos (nitrogênio, enxofre e/ou oxigênio), grupos funcionais, elétrons π em ligações duplas ou triplas e/ou anéis aromáticos. A eficiência de inibição e a adsorção na superfície metálica desses compostos podem ser estudadas experimentalmente, como também utilizando método quânticos. Este trabalho fornece uma revisão de técnicas experimentais (espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica, polarização potenciodinâmica e perda de massa) e quânticas fundamentais para o entendimento do comportamento de moléculas orgânicas como inibidoras de corrosão, assim como o mecanismo de inibição em meio ácido.
