Imaging in hypertensive heart disease

Abstract: Hypertensive heart disease is the target organ response to arterial hypertension. Left ventricular hypertrophy represents an important predictor for cardiovascular events. Myocardial fibrosis, a common end point in hypertensive heart disease, has been linked to the development of left ventricular hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction. Echocardiography is clinically useful in the detection of left ventricular hypertrophy and the assessment of diastolic function. Although echocardiography is more widely availabl… Show more

“…Measurements included left atrium diameter (LAD), interventricular septal thickness (IVST), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT), left ventricular end diastolic/systolic dimension (LVEDD/LVESD). LVM was calculated as 0.8 × (1.04 × [IVST + LVEDD + LVPWT 3 − LVEDD 3 ] + 0.6 g), and was used to assess the severity of LVH. In addition, we also evaluated the systolic function by left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the diastolic function by the ratio of peak of early diastolic transmitral flow to peak of early diastolic annular velocity (E/E' ratio).…”

“…We hypothesized that circulating fibrocyte levels are elevated in patients with HHD compared to healthy controls. To this end, we performed a pilot study to examine the association of circulating fibrocytes and their activated phenotypes with left ventricular mass as determined by cardiac MRI (CMR), the gold standard for evaluating left ventricular mass [34], in a cohort of patients with HHD.…”
