Imaging Evaluation of Fallopian Tubes and Related Disease: A Primer for Radiologists

Abstract: Describe the utility of different imaging modalities in evaluation of FT disease. Discuss the pathophysiologic features, key imaging features, and development and progression of various FT diseases, including benign and malignant conditions. Explain the pathogenesis of FT neoplasms and their role in the development of ovarian and serous peritoneal neoplasms.

“…The theory of initiation of some histological types of ovarian cancer from fallopian tubes has recently gained significant popularity. In particular, except for the serous histological subtype, there is strong evidence of the fallopian origin of some of endometrioid and clear cell ovarian carcinomas [ 11 , 36 ]. Moreover, the risk of malignant transformation in patients with endometriosis has been reported, mostly related to endometrioid and clear cell histology [ 8 ].…”

“…The radiological differential for the appearance of fallopian tube tuberculosis includes salpingitis isthmica nodosa, which shows several diverticula filled with contrast on the hysterosalpingogram, and fallopian tube intraluminal endometriosis. 70 Infection from fallopian tubes spreads to involve the endometrium in 50-70% of patients, although the myometrium is rarely affected. 60,71 Severe endometrial adhesions in uterine tuberculosis may mimic Asherman syndrome.…”
