Imaging Diagnosis—endometrial Mineralization in a Dog

Abstract: A 9-year-old intact female mixed breed dog was presented for mammary gland tumor surgery, and preoperative radiographs showed a tubular soft tissue opacity mass with multifocal mineralization in the caudoventral abdominal cavity. Subsequent ultrasonography demonstrated uterine dilation with echogenic fluid and endometrial acoustic shadowing consistent with mineralization. Resection of mammary gland tumors and ovariohysterectomy were performed. Pyometra was diagnosed on cytologic examination of uterine fluid. H… Show more

“…Dystrophic mineralisation has also been described in a canine uterine leiomyosarcoma 11 ; furthermore, generalised endometrial mineralisations related to long‐term progesterone administration have been reported in a bitch with pyometra 12 and in other bitch with cystic endometrial hyperplasia–pyometra complex and an ovarian granulosa cell tumour 13 . However, in these cases, mineralisations appeared on ultrasonography as echogenic pinpoint or straight endometrial foci or stippled hyperechoic lesions, accompanied by mild acoustic shadowing and comet tail artefact rather than C‐shaped structures.…”

“…However, a pattern of diffuse mineralisation in the uterus, as observed in this case, would be atypical in the uterine tumours. Multifocal areas of endometrial mineralisation have been observed in bitches under chronic treatment with synthetic progesterone,9 10 especially medroxyprogesterone acetate. In this case, the bitch never received treatment with synthetic progesterone; therefore, the endometrial mineralisation was not due to a long exogenous contraceptive treatment.…”

“…However, endometrial mineralisation is an uncommon uterine lesion which has been only associated with long use of synthetic progesterone contraceptives in bitches. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are only two manuscripts reporting lesions of endometrial mineralisation associated with CEH and pyometra 9 10. In these publications, medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment was given to the bitches during five and eight years, respectively.…”

“…Despite information above, DM initiated by insulin resistance and high insulin level in dogs is considered as an uncommon condition. Occasionally, persistent corpus luteal and pseudopregnancy in female dogs generates gestational DM (GDM); furthermore, the extensive use of artificial gestagens such as megestrol provokes DM by vacuoles formation in the β-cells [ 23 ].…”
