Imaging Characteristics of Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid Gland

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common parotid neoplasm. It has a relatively high rate of recurrence after surgery. Imaging features of recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenoma have been infrequently reported in the radiology literature. In the present study, we reviewed our institutional experience with imaging of recurrent parotid pleomorphic adenomas.

“…21,23 The incidence of tumour recurrence was 7.9%, whereas other groups have reported PA to have a recurrence rate of 20-45%. 22,24 In our samples, CD24 and CD44 were expressed throughout the progression of salivary glands from morphogenesis to neoplastic lesion (with pleomorphic adenoma as a model). CD24 and CD44 are used as stem cell markers in various tissues and organs, detected by various techniques.…”

“…MRI not only has excellent spatial resolution, but it can also determine involvement of the facial nerve, perineural areas, bone, and meninges. Furthermore, MRI confers excellent visibility of the neoplasm on T2 weighted images [16] .…”

“…Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma is often multifocal, involving both the tumor bed and the adjacent spaces. These lesions, often small nodules with diameter less than one centimeter, appear strongly hyperintense in T2 sequences, which are easy to identify, according to some authors [5]. …”
