Imaging Biomarkers for Monitoring the Inflammatory Redox Landscape in the Brain

Abstract: Inflammation is one key process in driving cellular redox homeostasis toward oxidative stress, which perpetuates inflammation. In the brain, this interplay results in a vicious cycle of cell death, the loss of neurons, and leakage of the blood–brain barrier. Hence, the neuroinflammatory response fuels the development of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. Interrogation of the interplay between inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell death in neurological tissue in vivo is very challenging. The complexity… Show more

“…The lead, cadmium, and nickel in the blood cause inflammatory changes and affect the balance of neurotransmitters. MAO can be used to assist in the diagnosis of brain abnormalities in combination with brain imaging [64]. The MOA-B analysis identifies changes from the molecular level to the effect of altered behavior.…”

“…On the other hand, oxidative stress can interact with individual signalling pathways, which may be more closely related to the detrimental effect and specificity of outer stimuli. In the nervous system, for example, the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is known as a neurotoxicity biomarker (Shiyntum et al, 2017;Abdel Salam, 2021) which is obviously connected with the ROS production (Gasso et al, 2020a;Fernandes & Özcelik, 2021). On the other hand, the inflammation is an important part of innate defence against infectious agents as well as xenobiotic toxicity.…”

“…As known, oxidative stress and inflammation are mutually dependent and connected [ 79 , 80 ]. The change of ROS also can reflect inflammatory conditions of the body [ 81 ]. Oxidative stress is a harmful process that can negatively affect several cellular structures, such as membranes, lipids, proteins, lipoproteins and DNA [ 82 , 83 ].…”
